Tamatie en uie smoor / Tomato Braai relish


  • 2 medium onions, sliced 
  • 1 T crushed garlic
  • 4 T olive oil
  • 1 x 800 g can whole peeled or chopped tomatoes. 
  • 156 g tomato paste
  • 2 T Mrs Balls Chutney
  • 1 T Worcestershire Sauce 
  • 1 Tsp Mixed Dried herbs 
  • 500 ml  water
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 Tsp chilli flakes (optional)


Fry the onions, garlic and herbs in olive oil  over a medium heat until soft and golden. Add the tomato paste and cook out for a min or so. Add tomatoes and chutney worchestershire sauce and simmer for a few minutes.

Add the water and simmer for at least 30 minutes until thickened, stirring often. Serve with Boerewors or braaied meat and pap.
